Q&A with Allan Clarke, Head of Lifting

Wednesday December 5, 2018

Q. In our last Q&A Pro Lifting founder Chris Crowley stressed the importance put on Safety. How is this reflected in your role at Pro Lifting?

A. I am Head of Lifting, which also means I am ultimately responsible for all H&S matters at Pro Lifting. The Pro Lifting site teams, consisting of Appointed Person’s, Crane Supervisors and Slingers, will produce all lift plans, method statements, risk assessments etc. When you engage a resident AP with us, he also becomes responsible for ALL lifting on site including MEWPs, Moffat’s, Telehandlers, Hiabs and so on. This means everything mechanically lifted from the ground on the site sits in one area of responsibility, US!

Q. You are looking after Tower Cranes, what about Rescue From Height responsibility on site?

A. Pro Lifting will be your Rescue From Height team once you have a team of three from us. All of our site teams are trained in the Heightec system for Rescue From Height. This will include for us to mark the crane and provide the full Rescue From Height kit. Without us providing this, the Main Contractor will have to source this elsewhere, so is a great cost benefit as well as making H&S sense.

Q. How do you make sure that standards are adhered to?

A. We have also developed the Knowledge Centre, which all our site teams and clients have access to. You can watch from a suite of around 30 3D animated videos, which demonstrate and describe safe lifting practice. These are often used by our customers and our own site team for toolbox talks and presentations etc. They also contain information on generic specific lifting risk assessments and has a library of technical lifting data too. I also personally audit sites, as does our own H&S retained external advisor. For us we believe that Pro Lifting taking full responsibility for all H&S for everything lifted on site ensures a coordinated approach that works for our Main Contractors.

Q. How long have you worked with Cranes then Allan?

A. Pretty much my whole career! I’ve been working with Pro Lifting for almost 5 years, and have witnessed at first hand the incredible growth. In the early days, Chris’s incredible drive to provide the Pro Lifting standard and take on a much wider responsibility than Main contractors have experienced before. They are now demanding much more in terms of the depth of service required by their Lifting Teams, which is H&S and £ efficiency driven. Treating this service as a more specialised package, rather than as part of a labour the only item in a fully encompassing logistics package, is becoming the norm rather than the exception. First and foremost we are the SAFEST option, but cost effective too!

Q. What’s changed in your time at Pro-lifting?

A. In a word GROWTH! We are now responsible for some of the UK’s biggest tower cranes on some iconic flagship sites too. Not bad from our humble beginnings. Pro Lifting has grown to over 100 people on site and in the office when I joined it was just a handful of us. It’s a testimony to our success that it’s our customer base that has helped us grow as they continue to use us from one project to another. This is because they understand and value our unique offering. We have further growth plans as we plan to showcase the Pro Lifting Standard wider across the construction community!
